BRITAIN spent a total of £1.24billion battling the swine flu outbreak, it was revealed yesterday.

But millions of pounds were wasted on drugs that were never used.

The UK suffered 457 swine flu-related deaths between April 2009 and March 2010.

During the pandemic the Government studied scientific advice before signing contracts with drugs giants for two doses of vaccine for every Brit - shortly before experts said ONE was enough.

Manufacturer Baxter agreed to part-cancel the order but GlaxoSmithKline refused.

Dame Deirdre Hine, the doctor who headed an independent review of Government actions, said yesterday "commercial confidentiality" barred her from revealing the amount of money wasted on drugs.

But she insisted the response to swine flu was "proportionate and effective".

At the height of the outbreak medical experts warned that 65,000 people could die.

A total of £1billion was spent on anti-viral drugs like Tamiflu, vaccines and antibiotics, said the review.
